The game is played between two players, each controlling pieces of a single color, typically red and black. The objective is to capture all of your opponent’s pieces or block them so that they cannot make a legal move.
Here are the basic rules for playing checkers:
Setup:
1. The game is played on a standard 8×8 checkerboard.
2. Each player starts with 12 pieces, typically referred to as “men,” which are placed on the dark squares of the three rows closest to them.
Movement:
1. Players take turns moving one of their pieces diagonally forward to an adjacent dark square.
2. Men can only move forward, but when a man reaches the last row on the opponent’s side, it is “crowned” and becomes a “king.”
King:
1. A king can move both forward and backward diagonally.
2. The king is often represented by stacking two normal pieces of the same color.
Capturing:
1. If an opponent’s piece is diagonally adjacent to one of your pieces and there is an empty dark square immediately beyond it, you can “capture” that piece.
2. Capturing is mandatory when possible. If a player has multiple capturing options, they can choose which one to take.
3. If a piece reaches the last row during a capture, it is still crowned and becomes a king.
Winning:
1. The game is won by either capturing all of your opponent’s pieces or putting them in a position where they cannot make a legal move.
Draw:
The game can end in a draw if the same position repeats three times, or if 25 consecutive moves are made by each player without any capturing.
